Clinical Psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and promote psychological well-being. Clients present with a wide range of concerns, e.g. anxiety, depression, mood or behaviour changes. These issues arise from a variety of different contexts, e.g. physical ill-health, work demands, and issues in private life including relationship matters.
The process starts with assessment, which entails using a variety of methods including interviews, observation and psychometric tests. Treatment involves helping people understand the nature of their circumstances, the impact upon health and how best to respond.
Clinical Psychologists undergo university based, post-graduate level training in the application of scientific knowledge to human behaviour problems and clinical conditions. They study a wide range of treatment approaches and thus are able to select methods that best fit client’s needs. Accordingly, they see models are tools rather than as creeds.
Given their scientific background, psychologists work in a systematic and rigorous way using evidence based techniques and theories. Using research methodology, they construct theories around the client and test hypotheses using applied interventions.
Their chartered status with the British Psychological Society ensures their training conforms to professional standards and their conduct meets ethical expectations. Their work is also subject to the scrutiny of an external regulator i.e. the Health Professions Council.
